Surf, sail, sleep!

It is already October! This poor blog is the last thing of all to receive an update in my life. So many fun shoots, awesome sailing afternoons, a few fun girls weekends and surf trips, a bunch of gorgeous weddings, and abundance of adorable kiddos in front of my camera. Not to mention the new site I am on the verge of launching! Thanks for stopping by this poor neglected blog, I think I *might* just get a few photos posted soon!

Here’s one quick snap, taken last week by my friend Philip (on my friend Sarah’s phone!) that sort of sums up a bit of the fun side of this year!  That’s me in the middle, with the red and yellow 8’0, surrounded by some of my super talented triathlete, marathon running, health writing, life coaching, and surf and snowboarding girlfriends!   xoxo

Casey and Ben’s Bridgehampton Tennis & Surf Club Wedding

The morning of their wedding, Ben surfed with the guys in Montauk and Casey hosted yoga with the ladies. The day started relaxed, had some poignantly emotional moments throughout, & ended with a raucous party!  Congrats Casey and Ben on your perfect day!

Gimlets in the Garden, The Noguchi Museum, June 13

The Noguchi Museum in Queens hosted a member’s night recently, with guided curator-led gallery tours and complimentary gimlets, made with care by Abraham Hawkins, head mixologist at Dutch Kills bar. The moody weather of the night kept many away, but those who ventured out were treated to a quiet museum, a strong and refreshing cocktail, and an overall memorable night.

The East Side Gimlet recipe is as follows (I made this at home with fantastic results!)
1 oz fresh lime juice
3/4 oz simple syrup
1 pinch of fresh mint
2-3 cucumber slices
2 oz gin
Shake vigorously with ice, strain into a champagne coupe.

Wrangling two year olds- no one said it would be easy!

Jen, Eli, big brother Zack and new baby Leo met me for an afternoon of portraits in the little park near their apartment.  I have to admit, babies are SO MUCH easier to photograph! Convincing Zack to join us for photos was quite the comedy, and we spent much of our time negotiating with him, trying to cajole him (dare I say trick him?) into the photos! A fun time was had by all.

Personal Projects

I’m taking a class right now at ICP, titled The Narrative Portrait. Amy Arbus is the instructor, and she’s guiding 12 or so of us through personal photographic journeys, giving hard critiques and opening our minds to better visual storytelling. The ongoing assignment is to photograph one subject over a ten week period, and I have chosen my Grandmother. She will be turning 95 in March and lives about an hour and a half away, in East Northport on Long Island. She graciously accepted my proposal to be my model & subject, and unfortunately I am missing this week’s photo session due to an ill-timed blizzard. Such is life, I suppose; I can control a lot of things, but the weather is not one of them!  Here are a few pictures from my previous session with my Grandmother.

Meet baby Evie!

I’m currently editing a family portrait session with 5 week old Evie as the star of the show! Evie’s parents and big brother Hudson (a ‘puggle’ -pug crossed with beagle!) were sent to me by mutual friends, and they were especially happy to see both my Furry Friends and Cutie Pies sections of the website! As someone who grew up with a lot of pets, I love capturing pet portraits as well as portraits of their human counterparts! More of Evie and her lovely family to come!

Family portraits

While I’m in the middle of editing my most recent portrait session, I’d like to share an image that I took this summer. Adam and his Dad were horsing around, waiting for Mom and Gabrielle to finish getting ready. Here is one of my favorites from that portion of our day together!

Cardon Adventure Resort, Celestino, Mexico

For Thanksgiving, Brian and I took off to Mexico for surf, rest, relaxation, & margaritas. We stayed at the amazing Cardon Adventure Resort on the recommendation of our friend and shaper, Chris Birch. A resort with only eight guestrooms, we were at the tail end of the high season, and we had the entire place to ourselves, including the perfect left hand point break out front. We could check the waves without even getting out of bed!  We also were able to help release baby turtles back into the ocean – the eggs had been saved from poachers and allowed to hatch safely in a program in the town of Celestino, sponsored in part by the Mexican government and also Cardon Resort. Helping these little guys scramble down the beach and swim off through the shore break was breathtaking!
